django CMS vs Drupal

Mario Colombo

Feb. 18, 2021

A good Content Management System (CMS) makes it easy for you to build a professional-looking website. And with django CMS and Drupal, developers can launch sites that show off their amazing content in a few minutes.

A good Content Management System (CMS) makes it easy for you to build a professional-looking website. And with django CMS and Drupal, developers can launch sites that show off their amazing content in a few minutes.

But it's not true that everyone will be just as happy with either platform. The wrong choice could result in you spending days learning a seemingly impossible interface. Or you may realise after many months that you're desperately missing a unique function for your site.

django CMS has one of the simplest interfaces of any CMS on the market. Even a beginner can edit content quickly without the help of a developer. However, that simplicity is only possible by prioritising the most important features. Users running complex sites out of the box will need to install plugins (Django apps can be easily integrated) or may even be better served by a more sophisticated CMS, like Drupal.

Drupal isn't an impossible interface to master, but it may seem like it if you're not a confident developer. That’s because Drupal is a CMS built for advanced developers by a community of advanced developers. Its users have often built websites in the past with other PHP-based platforms like WordPress and they now want a level of customisation you may not find with another platform.

The two platforms’ respective learning curve is their most important difference, but it isn’t the only consideration. Advanced developers may yet prefer the intuitiveness of django CMS while a beginner may ultimately want Drupal if they process lots of data.

That’s a lot to consider. So which CMS is best for you?

django CMS vs Drupal: the key points

django CMS is loved by developers and frontend-editors

django CMS is a CMS built for developers and content editors. Due to its lightweight core developers can integrate other existing Django applications rapidly, or build brand new compatible apps that take advantage of django CMS's publishing and editing features.

django CMS is user friendly and has a very intuitive drag and drop interface, which is also useful for content editors.

While the platform focuses on simplicity, most users will still enjoy all the features they need to make their website a success. django CMS comes with integrated statistics, quiz tools, a spell checker and a CAPTCHA test which helps your website determine whether visitors to your site are genuine or spam robots.

Another key aspect of django CMS: It is built around the needs of multilingual publishing by default, not as an afterthought: all websites, pages and content can exist in multiple language versions.

Finally, you’ll receive instant replies from the platform’s team of developers via Slack. So even if you do encounter a problem, an expert programmer will always be there to help.

Drupal is built for developers and power users

Drupal has many similar features to WordPress and indeed the two platforms are built with the same PHP scripting language.

But Drupal’s standout quality is its high level of customisation. Yes, it takes some learning and some users complain about the lack of how-to guides and tutorials. However, once you’ve mastered the platform you’ll enjoy thousands of modules and plugins that you won’t find with WordPress and even django CMS. Some of Drupal’s most popular functions include advanced menu management, graphics modification tools and much more.

However, there comes a point when you want to make a customization to the website that is not available through one of the many modules . The consequence is that the customization of the website becomes more complicated. In comparison: django CMS has fewer plugins and modules, but because of the Django framework and the Python programming language, it is very easy to write and integrate your own plugins.

Drupal’s extensive range of features comes with one unavoidable drawback: the more plugins and modules you add the greater the server load generated. But this problem is inevitable for any website with high levels of customisation and your website can still run smoothly with proper maintenance.

What differences will you enjoy with django CMS vs Drupal?

django CMS is specially designed to make a developer’s life easy:

  1. An easy drag-and-drop interface
  2. Runs on a Python scripting language - The most secure language on the market used by Google, Facebook, Spotify and Netflix
  3. Easy to integrate with other Django apps or self-written plugins

Drupal suits the complex needs of the most advanced developers:

  1. High customisation - Drupal comes with thousands of modules and plugins
  2. A bigger community of users - This means more users fixing problems and suggesting improvements
  3. Much steeper learning curve - Many less experienced users complain about the lack of clear documentation available

Who uses django CMS vs Drupal?

django CMS is popular with Django enthusiasts and Python lovers. Both developers and frontend users enjoy the simplicity of the platform’s interface. Notable users like L’oreal, NASA and National Geographic all love django CMS because its intuitive interface gives them more time to develop and improve their businesses.

Drupal is a great fit for sites that are constantly adding new content, like The Economist and the Louvre museum. Companies like Tesla also enjoy the platform’s high-level of customisation which helps them process high traffic and lots of data.

Which CMS should you choose?

If you’ve liked using a CMS like WordPress and want a PHP-based platform with high-levels of customisation, then Drupal is a great choice. Once you’ve mastered the system’s interface you can easily manage even the most complex sites. But most users don’t require such high levels of control and instead need ease-of-use for their website to flourish. That’s why django CMS provides all the core functions on the simplest interface available on the market. Finally, django CMS is specially built so that you can easily transfer all your data and files should your needs change and you move to another CMS.

django CMS vs Joomla

Mario Colombo

Feb. 15, 2021

Choosing the best Content Management System (CMS) for your website is overwhelming.

With django CMS and Joomla, you can relax and quickly start developing your site. But the two systems have an important difference which explains their differing popularity, and that's their programming language.

Joomla employs PHP which is also used by bigger platforms such as WordPress. It’s the most popular programming language and this familiarity is why many developers choose Joomla. A content management system running with PHP gives you lots of options to customise your site.

But django CMS doesn’t use PHP. Instead, it runs with Python, which is the world’s fastest-growing programming language. Developers of all abilities are flocking to platforms which use Python because of the security they offer your site. It’s for this reason that market leaders like Facebook, YouTube, Netflix and Spotify all use a CMS with a Python programming language.

While the two platforms provide your site differing levels of protection and customisation, both django CMS and Joomla offer interfaces which are easy-to-use regardless of your development experience.

The best choice depends first on whether you feel each platform provides enough security for your site, and secondly how much control you want over your site.

django CMS vs Joomla: the key points

What differences will you enjoy with django CMS vs Joomla?

django CMS offers you exclusive benefits:

  1. Thanks to its Python programming language you’ll enjoy one of the most secure CMSs available
  2. django CMS’s drag & drop function means users of all abilities can easily manage even the largest web design projects
  3. With django CMS you’ll get instant replies to your questions from the company’s expert team via Slack. The platform also provides free tutorials and how-to guides so you can master all its many features

Joomla has many of the benefits you’d expect from a CMS using PHP:

  1. Joomla’s larger community of users have designed over 8,000 extensions which give you greater flexibility over your site’s design
  2. It’s a familiar style of CMS for many developers
  3. With the Joomla SEO extension, you can boost your site’s ranking and conversion on Google

Systems like django CMS that use Python are increasingly popular with developers who value security and privacy.

Organisations that store sensitive data like Facebook, the CIA and many government departments rely on CMSs that use Python for their security.

django CMS uses that same Python programming language but provides a simple framework for users who don’t need such an extensive range of functions. The platform is easy-to-use while still offering you built-in security features which protect your site against a range of security threats.

CMSs that use PHP like Joomla continue to improve their security thanks to the work of their large communities. But these efforts haven’t stopped Python from becoming the fastest-growing programming language in the world.

Joomla’s big selection of plugins gives users greater control over their site’s functions

Joomla is a developer-focused CMS and it has a large programmer community who regularly create new plugins. However, as these plugins are not designed by Joomla itself, beginners may struggle to get support for potential problems when they’ve extended their site’s capabilities.

This shouldn’t deter experienced developers though who will enjoy the customisation such plugins provide. And users of all abilities can quickly create a smart-looking site with one of the many templates available in Joomla’s library.

With django CMS’s easy-to-use interface you can build a professional-looking site in minutes

django CMS is a free and open-source CMS used by thousands of businesses and individuals. The platform’s multilingual interface and web projects make it popular around the world and with international teams working across many languages.

The system’s drag and drop editing function means anyone can easily create professional-looking websites while managing large quantities of images, files and other content.

You can also quickly integrate django CMS with its many free plugins that give you greater control over your site.

Who uses django CMS vs Joomla?

django CMS’s simple interface and multilingual capabilities are well-suited to e-commerce and company websites. That’s why the platform is loved by users from around the world including NASA, National Geographic and L’oreal.

Joomla’s selection of plugins makes it popular with developers who want high customisation for their site. The platforms most prominent users include Nintendo Nordic and General Electric Russia.

django CMS is the best choice for developers who value security and want an easy interface to quickly create websites

If you’re familiar with a CMS like WordPress and who want to remain with a platform that uses a PHP programming language, then Joomla is a great choice.

However, no CMS can keep your data and website as safe as django CMS. The platform guarantees your site’s security while giving developers the same ease-of-use as popular PHP platforms.
